Car Modding Insurance

Car insurance premiums can be affordable for the ‘average’ driver, but once the insurers step outside of their comfort zone you usually find that their requirements, and therefore your premium, will increase. So whilst fitting extras to your car to mod it up, whether aesthetically or performance related, will inevitably make your car insurance go up. But all is not lost, as there are ways to mod your car whilst keeping the premium affordable, and here are some top tips for the best ways to do so.

Don’t go too specialist- Fitting new parts to your car is great for the enthusiast, time consuming yet worth every second once your work is done. But you can keep the premium down by ensuring that the parts you fit aren’t too hard to get hold of as the rarer they are the more expensive they’ll be to insure, so if you can do so, try and purchase parts which are non-standard but not too difficult to track down.

Work out the value – Working out the value of your modified car is essential as many insurance companies will try and bump your premium up just because you have modified it, without paying close attention to the work you’ve actually done. Make sure you note down the exact cost of the parts and then work out the insuring value. Remember that the money you’ll get from a payout won’t be as much as you paid because insurance companies work out the value of the car as the sell on value, not its true value.

Make it secure – The more unusual a car the more desirable it will be to would be thieves, so make your car as secure as possible. Making sure it’s in a locked garage at night for example can drastically reduce the premium and fitting an alarm, steering lock and even a tracker are great ways to make sure you don’t pay too much because of your love for your motor.

Shop around – last but not least the best bit of advice when looking for insurance providers is to simply look around by either using a comparison site or going direct to the insurers. Spending some time shopping around online could save you hundreds of pounds. For example, Kwik Fit Insurance offer 20% off their car insurance quotes, when you purchase online.
